GST Registration Eligibility in India

As per GST regulations, you need to get GST registration if : 


  • Your turnover from sale of goods exceeds Rs 40 lakh annually (Rs.20 lakhs for special category states)

  • Your turnover from sale of services exceeds Rs. 20 lakh annually (Rs.10 lakhs for special category states)

  • If you are engaged in interstate supply of goods and services

  • If you sell through E-commerce platforms like Myntra, Amazon etc

  • If you are a Casual taxable person or a Non resident taxable person

  • If you have to pay tax under reverse charge mechanism

  • If you are required to deduct TDS or TCS under GST

  • If you are an E-commerce operator 

  • If you are making supply on behalf of someone else whether as an agent or principal 

  • If you are supplying online money gaming from a place outside India to a person in India

  • If you are an Input service distributor


Voluntary GST Registration

You can apply for GST registration even if you are not required to get registered under GST as per law.

GST registration in India is completely free when you apply through the official government portal. There are no GST registration fees charged by the government.

List of Documents Needed for GST Registration 

Here is the list of documents you require to register under GST for three most common types of Business Structure


1. Proprietorship Firm :

  • PAN card

  • Aadhar card

  • Photograph of the proprietor 

  • Bank account details

  • Business address proof


2. Partnership firm:

  • PAN of partnership firm

  • Aadhar card and PAN of all partners in the firm

  • Photographs of the partners

  • Partnership deed

  • Business address proof

  • Bank account details

3. Private Limited Company or LLP:

  • Certificate of Incorporation issued by MCA 

  • Memorandum of Association (MOA) & Articles of Association (AOA)

  • PAN Card of the Company

  • Aadhaar Card of all directors

  • PAN Card of all directors

  • Photograph of directors

  • Business address proof

  • Bank account details

  • Board resolution or authorisation letter

  • Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) of authorized signatory


Composition Scheme

If you are a Manufacturer or a Trader supplying goods or a Restaurant service provider (not serving alcohol) then you can opt for composition scheme if your aggregate turnover is up to ₹1.5 crore (₹75 lakh for special category states) .

If you are a small service provider, you can opt for composition scheme if your aggregate turnover is up to ₹50 lakh

How to Register for GST?

GST registration is done completely online through the GST Portal. There is no need to visit any government office.

  1. Visit the official GST portal 

  2. Select new registration

  3. Enter PAN, Mobile number, Email ID in Part A of the REG-01 form. 

  4. Verify using OTP

  5. You will receive a 15 digit TRN (Temporary Reference Number)

  6. Login using TRN and OTP and complete the GST registration form (Part B) which includes:

  • Business details

  • Promoter/partner details

  • Authorized signatory

  • Principal place of business

  • Bank account details

  1. Upload required documents like:

  • PAN card of business/owner

  • Aadhaar card

  • Business registration proof (if applicable)

  • Address proof (electricity bill, rent agreement, etc.)

  • Bank account proof (cancelled cheque or bank statement)

  • Digital signature (for companies/LLPs)

  1. Complete Aadhaar authentication 

  2. Review and submit with DSC(Digital Signature Certificate )/EVC ( OTP verification)

  3. After submission, you’ll receive an Application Reference Number (ARN) to track your application status.

  4. If everything is correct your application is approved by GST officer

  5. You will receive your GSTIN (Goods and Services Tax Identification Number)

  6. Download your certificate from the GST portal
